Let’s Get Pop Rockin’ with Adjectives!

Since we have now mastered what an adjective is, it is now time to use adjectives in our writing to make our sentences more “colorful”! Monday morning I presented the students with a present. I didn’t share with them what was in the present…. instead we just talked about what the present looked like. Bummer huh?! We used our best adjectives to describe what the present looked like:

Tuesday, I revealed what was inside the gift bag… POP ROCKS!!!

Before eating them, the students smelled, and touched the pop rocks to make sure we were covering all of our senses. Then, everyone got to eat their bag of pop rocks! It was so funny listening to all of the popping goin’ on in the room! Most of them were afraid to shut their mouth! HA!

After their experience, they jotted down some adjectives describing them.

Then, we met as a whole group and everyone shared part of their experience!

The last day of our week full of pop rock activities, we combined everything we talked about, and did a little descriptive writing with our Pop Rocks! How stinkin’ CUTE?!

Feather Measurement!

Today we decorated turkey feathers and I grouped the class into groups of 3. They went on a hunt measuring things that were either 1, 2, or 3 turkey feathers long. They had SUCH a blast! They were pretty good at it too!!

Main Idea

Our focus this week was Main Idea and Details, so after we read Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg, we identified the Main Idea and the students provided me with the details. Thanksgiving activities 027

The class made a mini-Johnny that included the main idea and a supporting detail of their choosing. Of course, they all chose “He loved apples” or “ He loved animals” as their details!

The Ugly Pumpkin (A Unit on Adjectives)

To start this lesson, I read the class the book “The Ugly Pumpkin”.

After reading this story, we completed a whole group chart about adjective that described our squashy friend at the beginning and end of our story.

The green words describe the ugly pumpkin at the beginning, and the black words describe the ugly pumpkin at the end. They were so creative coming up with describing words!

Because the story ended on a positive note, and because we wanted the Ugly Pumpkin to be proud of who he was, the kiddos completed a similar graphic organizer using only positive adjectives. We followed that up with a little craftivity that turned out suuuuuuuper cute!!

Since I always embrace my student’s artistic abilities, I couldn’t help but love the flexible version of the Ugly Pumpkin =)
