What’s in My Teacher’s Bag? {Making Inferences}

Continuing with inferences, I started this lesson involving the contents of the large bag I tote back and forth to school each day. After reviewing  Schema and Inference, they made inferences about me based on what was inside. This was a great review, and they did great!

Next, they did a follow up activity where they drew 2 pictures of things I had in my bag, along with what they could infer about me.

NO DAVID! Inference

To follow up our Snowy Day Case Files inference activity a couple weeks ago, we pulled out the book NO David! First up, we made a little “No David” inference brainstorm chart. We talked about our schema and the text clues to make really good inferences. As we looked at each page from the story, I called on a few students to give me an inference about the picture and then the clue/schema that helped them make that inference.

After we brainstormed our inferences, I introduced our little anchor chart. We talked about words to use {sentence starters} when we’re making / writing about inferences. We went over schema again and they IMMEDIATELY knew what evidence was thanks to our previous Snow Day activity!

I had the students fill out this inferencing sheet where they had to describe a picture from the story, write their inference about the picture, and then write about a clue/schema that helped them make their inference. LOVE!!!

Contraction Surgery

We ended our super fun contraction week by doing a little surgery! Anna Claire’s mom was so sweet to donate all of our supplies we needed! The kids got masks and surgical gloves and then went to town with their scalpels {scissors} cutting apart words and then bandaging new words {contractions} together. The kids were SO pumped!! Each doctor got to perform surgery, and they assisted other doctors if they needed help. They have never been more engaged! I took all the bandaged words and taped them to the door to hang out with “Dr. C.” They have been knockin’ my socks off with their use and recognition of contractions! I’m so excited!!

Contraction Crocodile

We started out the week introducing my little friend “Contraction Crocodile” to kick off our week of contraction activities.

 Science 006

I explained that the crocodile LOVES to eat letters. He chews them up and swallows them whole, then spits out apostrophes in their place(s). He likes to make words shorter because they’re easier to say! They did a great job coming up with words that make contractions!

After introducing contractions, I broke the students up into pairs to do a “Crawfish Contraction” activity. They had to match the crawfish word to the crawfish contraction. After finding all of the matches, they wrote them on the corresponding sheet and used them in sentences!

Mystery Liquids

We have been studying in Science all about the 3 states of matter. Let me tell you, the experiments have been in full force and we are having an absolute blast doing them! Today we met with Miss Samson’s class in the Science lab to do our first experiment called “Mystery Liquids”.

First, we talked about the different properties of liquids. Then, the students rotated in groups to observe the liquid that was placed on each table. They had to use what they knew about liquids to correctly guess what each one actually was.
