Blue Whales

Our story this week was "Dear Mr. Blueberry". It was about a girl Emily who wants to learn all kinds of information about a whale she thinks she sees in her back yard! Did you know that blue whales are the biggest animal to ever live on earth? Some are more than 100 feet long. A blue whales heart can weigh as much as a small car. Blue whales are mammals and they eat tiny shrimp-like animals called krill. Today, the whole second grade went outside to get a better idea of just how BIG a blue whale really is. It is hard to imagine that a whale could be that big!

Mystery Reader

Cole's mom was our Mystery Reader this week! She read the book "Chicks and Salsa". It was about a rooster who sneaks into a kitchen and cooks up an entire fiesta for the animals on the farm! It was a really funny book. Everyone got hungry from reading it!

Mystery Reader

We had a special mystery reader today! Jana's sister came to read to us! She read Rainbow Fish. Everyone loved hearing her read the story, and the pictures were beautiful!

Western Day

We read the story "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" by Mark Teague this week. In this story, a boy named Wallace tells about being captured by cowboys during his summer vacation. Wallace learns all about life as a cowboy and we learned a lot about cowboys too! For example, cowboys wore specific things to help them survive. They wore wide-brimmed hats to protect their faces from the sun. Also, they wore boots to protect the legs and help their feet stay in the stirrups of their horses. So, today we used our imaginations and dressed up as cowboys and cowgirls! We also made tasty trail mix! Yeehaw!

I Have a Dream

Today we discussed Martin Luther King Jr. and what he meant from his "I Have a Dream" speech long ago. We have written what our dreams are for our community, our country, and the world. Here are a few:

Our community:
..... for people to stop arguing.... for people to stop breaking into stores.... for people to not litter and to respect children.... for people to like each other.... for people to be kind.... no killing .... make everything free.... trust in God

Our Country:
obey the Lord... poor people to get money... no stealing .....to let kids be on American Idol... for everyone to become a citizen... love the Lord

Our World:
no more wars .... freedom for everyone... everyone love each other.... no one shoots people... let people follow their dreams..... for continents not to hate each other....world peace... for the government to pay us right

Solar System

Today we continued to learn more about the solar system. A solar system is made up of a star and the objects that travel around that star. In our solar system, the star is called the Sun. There are 8 planets in our solar system. (In case you did not know, Pluto is no longer classified as a planet!) We did research today to learn more about each individual planet. Then, we shared our findings with the class. It was very interesting!

Funny Field Trips

We are reading "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash" in Reading this week. It is a fantasy story about a class field trip that went a little crazy! Can you think of a fun field trip that you have gone on? Where did you go? What did you do? What was the best part of the trip?
